The Diva's Hustle Interview with Chelsea Turpin.
1.) The Diva's Hustle mantra: "Too Strong, Too Smart, and Too Fabulous to Settle." Do you feel that you exemplify these things and if so how?
Chelsea: Yes, I definitely feel that way. Deciding not to settle for less is very empowering. It sets the tone in your mind that you are worth something more, therefore you aspire for something great. I feel like when you settle you are saying "Okay, I'll accept this because it's the best I can do."
2.) Tell us a little more of your background where you grew up and came from to where are you going now.
Chelsea: I grew up in Southern Cali. I have always known I wanted to work in the fashion business. I started my first business in 3rd grade selling handmade bracelets and bookmarks on the playground. When I got to high school I decided I was going to do whatever I could to reach my goals and that's exactly what I did. I started working retail at 15 and had my first internship at a boutique in LA at 16. When you know what you want to do, and constantly search for opportunity, things seem to fall into place.
3.) Name 2 people who inspire you now and why they do?
Chelsea: My mother inspires me a lot because she is relentless. No matter what obstacles appear in her life she has always remained positive, hard working, and strong. I admire that a lot and when problems appear in my life I know things will work out for the best and I keep pushing. I get a lot of my strength from the example she set for me
My grandmother is also a really big inspiration of mine. She is the most confident woman I know. She believes that she can do anything she sets her mind to and that's exactly what she does. I can always pick up the phone and call her when I need a pep talk or a good laugh. She keeps me grounded and motivated. I really want to make her proud.
4.) How did you get to where you are now?
Chelsea: I feel like I've gotten to where I am now by not taking no for an answer. Over the years I have been through a lot and fallen off track a couple of times but I never let it stop me. I also choose not to get complacent. If I see that I am not progressing I always take a step back, evaluate my current situation, and decide what needs to change.
5.) Is New York everything you dreamed of?
Chelsea: New York is amazing. It definitely is beyond what I dreamed when it comes to opportunity to work in the fashion industry. Within a month of being here I worked at fashion week and I recently landed and internship at Oscar De La Renta. These things seemed so inaccessible at first, so it's amazing that I can achieve these things here. The only downside would be the freezing cold weather and the subway is frustrating at times.
6.) Who is your biggest fashion influences now?
Chelsea: I feel so lucky to be living in a time where I can get fashion inspiration anywhere. We don't just have to look at what celebrities are wearing and so wow that's nice but I can't afford it. I get a lot of my influences from people I follow on Instagram, fashion blogs, and tumblr. If I did have to choose one influence it would definitely be Kim Kardashian. I feel like she has mastered looking trendy, classic, and sexy all at the same time.
7.) Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Chelsea: In 10 years I hope that people in the fashion industry hear my name and know exactly who I am. I want to be front row at fashion week and I want to be that girl in amazing clothes with an awesome job. I still want to be a sweet Cali girl but with that New Yorker work ethic and confidence.
8.) What the best advice you can give about having a Diva's Hustle mind set?
Chelsea: My best advice would be to just be yourself and do what you love. I believe we have the responsibility to share our talents and passions with the world. Don't let other people's opinions influence you because at the end of the day this is your life. Live it to the fullest and achieve as much as you can because you will never get this time back.
9.) What are 5 thing's we would find in your purse right now?
Chelsea: Three different lipsticks/glosses from Mac (love child, ruby woo, and up the amp)
Vintage YSL sunglasses
iPhone charger
A pack of 5 gum
Michael Kors wallet with my keychain attached

Diva of the Month | 10.) What is your perspective on regrets? Chelsea: I don't think you should regret anything. Everything happens for a reason and it may seem hard when you fail or get hurt but you live and you learn. 11.) How old are you and what does that number mean to you? Chelsea: I'm 20. It's a weird age. You still feel like a kid at times but you have a lot more responsibility than before. You learn so much about yourself at this age because you have the freedom to make all of your own choices but all of these choices affect you and you have to deal with the consequences on your own. 12.) Name one of your beauty secrets? If you have one. (i.e. a facial mask, hair conditioning concation, work out secret, and etc) Chelsea: Moroccan oil is amazing. I am natural and my hair gets really dry at times. I put Moroccan oil on my hair before I blow dry it makes it so shiny and soft. 13.) Name your top 5 hype songs that motivate you. Chelsea: I can't narrow it down to just 5. My entire playlist gets me hype in general. It's a mix on French Montana, Beyoncé, Drake, Meek Mill, and Jhene Aiko. |
